Description
The Durbar Square, with its old Temples, palaces, and shrines, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. It is here that the Kings of Nepal were crowned. Until the early 20th century the Durbar Square was the Kings residence.
Kathmandu, Nepal.
In this image: Carved from a single piece of stone the six-armed Bhairav is depicted crushing the demon Vetala underfoot.
The Bhairav represents the deity Shiva in his destructive manifestation. This is the most famous Bhairav and it was used by the government as a place for people to swear the truth as it was believed that anyone who lied in front of the stone carving would die.
