Tiwanaku: Spiritual and Political Centre of the Tiwanaku Culture.
The archaeological site of Tiwanaku is located near the southern shores of Lake Titicaca at an altitude of 3,850m. Most of the ancient city has been destroyed, however the monumental stone buildings of the ceremonial centre survive to this day.
The true purpose and age of the site divides opinion which only adds to the mystery of this wonderful archaeological site.
This image shows the monumental stone statue known as the Ponce Monolith, known locally as the friar he appears to be holding a book in his left hand. Tiwanaku, La Paz Department, Bolivia.
